for animals!

Have your say in the EU's public consultation on animal welfare.

The current animal welfare laws in the EU are outdated and inadequate.

They fall short of scientific recommendations and the ethical standards that citizens expect. Most critically, they fail to protect animals from the cruellest practices of industrial farming – cramped cages, cruel mutilations, and the routine killing of day-old chicks.

But there's a rare opportunity for change.

The European Commission is reviewing these laws right now and asking for YOUR input, whether you are an EU citizen or not.

To maximize the impact of your response, please share your own thoughts in your own words – even a few sentences from your personal viewpoint are more valuable than a copied statement.

What the EU is asking:

What would you want to see change for farmed animals, and why?

Guidance to help you answer:

Think about a farm animal welfare issue you’ve seen or heard about that concerns you. Perhaps you are most concerned about:

  • Animals being mostly kept in cages on farms.
  • Male chicks being killed when only a day old.
  • EU welfare standards not being applied to imports from outside.

If you could change one thing about how farm animals are kept, what would it be, and why does it matter to you?

What the EU is asking:

If we improve animal welfare, what would farmers need to succeed? How could this actually help farming?

Guidance to help you answer:

You might want to ask yourself:

  • How can better animal welfare also be good for farming businesses? (e.g., healthier animals, increased consumer trust, higher consumer demand).
  • If we improve animal welfare, what would farmers need to succeed? (e.g., funding, training, support to move to higher welfare).

While this question is not directly about animals, it’s still important to answer. You don’t need to be an expert, just share your opinion.

This is your chance to:

  • Share personal experiences or observations.
  • Highlight issues not covered in other questions.
  • Provide evidence, research, or examples you know.
  • Emphasize what matters most to you.

Example phrases you can use:

"I'd also like to mention…"
"From my experience as a [consumer/citizen]…"
"One concern not addressed above is…"
"It's crucial that any new legislation includes…"

This question is optional, so feel free to leave it blank if you have nothing else to add.
